Autumn 2021 Make Up Trends

Updated: Sep 22, 2021

With the change of season comes the impulse to change our looks. Make-up this fall is full of color, drama, and style. As the leaves fall, these make up trends rise:

Eyes

Soap Brows

The reign of natural bushy brows is still going strong. The soap brow technique has added to the look. The technique involves using clear bar soap and a spoolie to brush brows upwards and set them before filling in the sparse areas.

Graphic + Dramatic Liner

Swap your blacks and browns for something colorful, or better yet, use them both. With the revival of Gossip Girl, we saw the second coming of intense smudged black eyeliner (;the iconic look of Taylor Momsen who played Jenny Humphrey in the original series.). The intensity is fading, but the smudged line is here to stay. Also making a comeback, is the kitten eye. A much smaller wing than the original cat eye, it's growing in popularity as a subtle wing to enhance a "no make-up make-up look". If you feel bold, another wing to try is the winged underline.

Full Eyelashes

Ultra-long, ultra-thick, ultra-voluminous eyelashes have continued to trend. If you're not into layering mascara, false lashes or lash extensions make for an alternative.

Colorful Shadows

There's two different smokey eyes to look for this season: for the daring, the smudged olive smokey eye; and for the demure, the subtle smoke. Metallics have returned with an emphasis on bronze. And a color you are sure to see everywhere is lilac. A shadow trend I'm dying to try is Mother of Pearl, it involves blending a shimmer with a hint of pink.

Lips

Lipstick is Back

Colorful lips are plentiful this season. Shades that are coming in hot for fall tend to be dark, like berry, brick, and plum.

The 90's Called and They Said We Can Keep Their Liner

The trend of lining your lips with dark lip liner is still here. The technique involves lining your lips and smudging inwards, and applying lipstick in the center of your pout and blending outwards. Please hold while I try to emulate Cindy Crawford.

Face

Draping

Draping is a new contour technique using blush to change your facial features with more nuance than the original technique with bronzer. For me, I'll be swiping my rouge a little below the apples of my cheeks to help elongate my round face.

Dewy Glow

To really get the look, you have to up your skincare game with Vitamin C, moisturizers to replenish the skin barrier, and serums with hyaluronic acid to maximize hydration. With bronzer being swapped for blush, highlighting has found a new home in aiding in the appearance of dewy skin.

Monochromatic

A monochromatic face is the perfect way to update your routine because it is so simple. Use the same color on your lids, lips, and cheeks to close out the look. Terracotta is a favorite color for this trend.
