How & Why to Transition to Autumn Skin

As the weather transitions from Summer to Fall, so does our skincare needs! If you're on the perpetual quest to get serious about your skincare routines, Autumn is the most crucial time to do it. It's the time to recover from the harsh effects of Summer and prepare for the impending dryness of winter. So while you switch up your wardrobe from Summer essentials to Fall Favorites, look to make these swaps as well:

  1. Dry Air = More Moisturizer: Retire your lotions and serums for creams, which are more oily in composition and designed to trap in moisture. Look for ceramides, the natural lipids found in the skin that can help to trap in moisture. Avoid over using salicylic acid when treating acne. Apply after bathing to achieve better results.

  2. Prep for Winter: Introduce hand cream into your rotation to prepare for Winter. Additionally, focus on moisturizing lip balm to prevent dry cracked lips for next season.

  3. Summer Recovery: By day: Repair after the sun with Vitamin C and Hyaluronic Acid. The antioxidant Vitamin C stimulates collagen production and reduces the damage done by free radicals and sun damage. Hyaluronic Acid is a binding agent between water and collagen to help it stay in the skin. By night: Use Vitamin A, like retinol, to turn over skin cells. It increases your sensitivity to UV light, so be sure to keep applying SPF.

  4. Change Cleansers: Ditch exfoliating cleansers for their non-exfoliating counterparts. Bonus points, if you have a cream face wash to reduce moisture loss. And if you're a true believer in exfoliating, look to glycolic acid, a gentle exfoliate and alternate with your nights of retinol.
